Movie Night!

My friend, Sarah, from work enjoys most of the same types of movies I do. For me, this is hard to find as I'm a 23-year-old who loves old black and white movies, musicals, kid movies, etc. I'm so excited because we've decided to try and start a ritual of movie nights! We even let our nerdy sides show even more and decided for the nights to have themes! Tonight is our first date, and the theme is 3D MOVIES!

1st Movie
Coraline

2nd Movie
Little Shop of Horrors(The classic horror movie - not the musical)

Is it COMPLETELY pathetic that I'm so excited?

PHILADELPHIA ZOO!!!

While my brother and his family were up from Alabama, we took my niece and nephew on their first trip to the zoo! They were so excited and so was I! Having them live so far away has been torture this whole time. I helped to raise my oldest nephew, Xzairre, and have been able to experience the big steps in his life and take him to a lot of his "firsts". I frequently become sad at the realization of how much I'm missing out on in Nicholas and Natalies lives. But I did NOT miss their first zoo, their first beach, their first baseball game, Natalies first trip to buildabear, or their first carnival. GO ME!

Anyway, back to the Philadelphia Zoo. The kids had an amazing time and so did I. I considered this my first 'real' zoo. I had only every been to the Brandywine Zoo before. Deprived... I know. Here are some favorite pictures of the day:

This is my nephew, Xzairre. He got his face painted like a dinosaur. I think they did an awesome job, although he was upset that it wasnt as green as the poster showed it would be. Poor baby.

This is my one and only beautiful niece, Natalie. She loved her butterfly facepaint some much that she refused to take it off. My sister-in-law Chelle had to wipe it off while she slept. Of course, she woke up first thing screaming at the top of her lungs about her 'piddy' butterfly!

Nicholas didn't get his face painted, but here he is posing with his sister and cousin.

Favorite animal there? The elephant. They're so cute!

Did you really think I was going to let the kids have all of the fun?! Here enters Katy the koala! In the artists defense, this was after hours of sweat running over my face. I told you I had a lot of fun :)

Sometimes time and life really does seem to fly by. At the very end of March we moved into our house. All of April was spent working on our house and celebrating the step we had taken in our lives. In May, Jude was born. The middle of June brought our engagement that we barely had time to celebrate when my brother and his family came visiting from Alabama. After a month of enjoying their company and trying to show my niece and nephew marvelous things they've never seen or experienced before, its finally time to sit down and think.

All I can think of is the comment Ryan made to me the last time I saw him. Something along the lines of 'you need to get your ass up and start planning your wedding because its going to be here before you know it'. He is right. Here we are a little more than a month away from the engagement party, and I have no clue what I'm doing or what I'm "supposed to do". I should really be booking the reception venue soon but we niether have the money or the final decision on where we want it to be. Its very unsettling.

Its crunch time. Time to start banging out some overtime. Time to start getting serious about planning our wedding and engagement party. Time to get to the gym. Time to start taking better care of myself, Bry, and our pets. Time to squeeze every bit of time out of my life that I can.

It sounds like a lot of work...

Wedding Plans

Since the engagement, we have begun to do some planning for the wedding. For us, the biggest piece of the puzzle is our reception site, especially since we plan to get married in or around the same place. At first our plan was to have the ceremony and reception at Milburn Orchards. I still love this idea. Main problem: having to have a backup venue. Either we would have to get a cheap place and probably end up being disappointed if we have to have it there, or we would end up spending thousands of dollars on a place we never used. Alicia(my very own wedding plan assistant) was looking online at venues one day and found a barn in Bellevue State Park that hosts events. Its called the Figure 8 Barn and we fell in love with it. A few weeks later we took a tour of it and felt like it was the place for us. It was an awesome barn that would make it easy for us to plan a really fun/unique wedding, and it was located in a park where we could find a place to hold the ceremony. Unfortunately, they're not being very accommodating or pleasant even in the beginning stages of the ordeal, so we will continue to browse other venues. I would not be surprised if we end up going with them in the end, but at least we will know that there wasnt anything better for us out there.

Last Sunday I went to Davids Bridal along with my sister, mom, sister-in-law, niece, and soon to be sister-in-law, Alicia. I tried on what felt like(and probably wasnt far off from) 20 dresses. While we found a few that I liked, none of them felt like 'the dress'. There were still really good things that came out of, though. I've been able to see what kind of dress flatters me and what kind of dress I really like, as well as being able to try on a hair piece thats very similar to what I imagined wearing. We also were able to let the 3 bridesmaids that I'm SURE will be in the wedding try on some dresses. I really wanted to make sure to do this while everyone was together since everyone of them have a different body type. Apparently, from what the ladies at work say, I'm a pretty laidback bride-to-be. My ideal bridesmaid dress would be a knee length dress in autumn colors. As long as they coordinate with eachother, thats all I care about. I want to make sure everyone is comfortable in what they're wearing and it would be another plus if they would be able to reuse the dress again. I hate the thought of someone spending 100 dollars on a dress they will use once for our wedding. Once again, we found ones that everyone liked, but they dont seem to be the ones for us. My little niece tried on some flower girl dresses, but I don't think it matters what she wears. She's going to be adorable no matter what.

Other than that, we've just been thinking about small details of the wedding. If you know us at all, you'll know from our house full of little cute/funny novelty items that we love those little special touches. One of our first purchases was a collectible item that we're hoping to be able to use as a cake topper and reuse as a decoration after the wedding is over and done. I think it's absolutely adorable!

We can cross another one of the big numbers off of the 101 list because something wonderful happened last Sunday...

Bryan proposed! I was SO surprised! Let met just start by saying that I SWORE I would know when he bought the ring and then again I would know when he was planning the engagement. I think he and his close family knew this, so he tried a little harder than normal to hide it. It might be that I'm slightly naive, but I had no idea what was coming!

A few days before, he threw out the idea of going down to Ocean City Maryland where his grandparents have a time share at a condo. Thinking nothing of it, and always looking for an excuse to do something other that spend time at home, I was more than willing to go. He did surprisingly well at being nonchalant about the whole thing. Not once did I get the feeling that we were going to the beach for anything other than just to hang out. His sister, brother in law, nephew, Mommom, and Poppop were all down there by the time we got settled in. We talked, ate dinner, and made our way back to the condo. Ryan had to leave for work the next morning bright and early(which I thought was weird, but never thought that he came down for a more momentous occasion), so Alicia said she wanted Ryan to be there for Judes first time at the beach. Once again, thinking nothing of it, I was excited to walk on the beach at night.

Even more naive... we took pictures of Ryan, Alicia, and Jude, and were just standing looking at the waves when Bryan says, "Lets walk down by the water". I say, "the waters cold"... not thinking anything, and turn around to see Ryan turn around to Alicia awkwardly and say "Sooo....", you know, the thing where you make fake awkward comments to make it look like you're deep in conversation. Still, instead of thinking, "somethings fishy", I just thought Ryan was being a little weirdo. A few minutes later Bryan was down on one knee. My first reaction was, "What?", and as he stuttered through his prepared speech in what seemed to be painful nervousness, I apparently ended up saying, "you can stop talking, I'll marry you" and put my beautiful ring on. I was so ridiculously shocked and we were both excited.

Later on that night we sat on the beach together and he told me all about the plans and what his speech was supposed to say. At one point he even said, "well, now we can cross two things off the list!" He's such a "keeper". Now the real fun begins!

Only one more week until I can drink soda again! Its a few more days after that before we can have fast food again, but besides some Chick Fil-A waffle fries and sweet tea, I'm not at all interested in rushing to a fast food joint to get a fix. Soda, on the other hand, is a different story. While I dont want to get back into drinking it regularly, I really do crave an ice cold refreshing soda every once in a while. Bryan and I found that while dining at restaurants and ordering our drinks, it was pretty tough to not order a soda. It used to be so natural to order two cokes and it was actually awkward to have to ask what they offered besides soda(since Bryan nearly refuses to drink water while eating).

On a smaller note: I went out to potstickers with some friends from work on Friday night and I had another first. I tried sushi. This was a big step for me because I don't like most cooked fish, so I was very intimated by the thought of eating them raw. I am not anxious to get my second tasting, but it was not as bad as I had expected. It made me feel more cultured :).

As I briefly mentioned in a previous post, Bryan and I have been weighing and tossing around the idea to move our projected wedding date up a year earlier. We figured that it mainly depended on whether we could slash the budget a tiny bit to make it easier to save before the big day. So, our plan was to call Milburn Orchards (the place I have my heart set on for the ceremony and reception) to see how much it would cost to go through them. So Saturday we finally were called back and given a number that was WAY below what we had expected! As it looks now, we will probably be getting married in 2010 instead of 2011. It’s already exciting/stressful to think about. I think we will definitely know by October whether or not we can pull it off which will give us a year worth of planning time to get things put together. This way, we will have a few months to know if we can put together all of the money we would need and we would be able to go up to Millburn’s around the same time of year that we want to get married to be able to make sure it will work for us around their busy season.

The only major downside to this is that our planned trip (To Disney, or Ireland, or wherever we were going to decide to go) will probably have to be put on hold. I hope we can make up for this with small trips. We already plan on visiting Niagara this summer or fall. We thought that by getting a mortgage we would be so tight that we would be eating ramen noodles by candle light for the first few months, but so far, the $400 jump between the apartment and here has been barely noticeable. If anything, it’s been all of the renovations that have made a difference simply because our spending pattern has changed. Anyway, stay tuned for more updates.

Poor Bryan better get a move on it. Time is quickly closing in on the poor guy!

As noted previously, last Saturday was my friend Alicia's Wedding. It was very simple, intimate, and sweet.
They got married at a small church and then we all hiked to Old New Castle for dinner, drinks, and dancing at the Arsenal on the Green.

This picture doesnt have much to do with the wedding besides the fact that it was at the cocktail hour... I just really like the picture.

Here we are with my friend Alicia, the bride!

This was, by far, my favorite moment of the night. Its a little bit hard to see due to the crappy camera, but this is Alicia and her new husband Spencer dancing while her father sung and played "I loved her First" by Heartland on the guitar. Needless to say, he made all the ladies bawl, and I asked him to be my father shortly after he finished.

And of course, a beautiful picture of the happy couple.
If anyone wants to see any of the other pictures from the wedding, you can look at the album I put together for Alicias mom here.

Digital Cameras, Continued.

On Saturday, Bryan and I attended the wedding of a friend I made while working at Michael’s Arts and Crafts a few years ago. Obviously, I took my new “comparable” camera to take pictures (that I still have to upload… slacker). Point being – I was not in love with the camera. Even though it was almost twice the MP of my old camera, I was unhappy with the quality of the pictures. I looked on Best Buys reviews for the camera, and apparently it was not something I was doing wrong. Out of the few people who wrote reviews, more than 75% of them said they took the camera back because they were so displeased with the quality. When I was in Best Buy speaking to the Geek Squad, they mentioned that if I bought a nicer camera, I would just have to pay the difference.

My 101 List contained a goal to fix and learn how to use my grandfathers camera. My grandfather had one of the old bulky cameras with multiple attachments and settings. I wanted to learn how to use it and see if I liked it so that I could better weigh the possibility of purchasing a digital SLR camera. But when the opportunity arose, Bryan and I decided to take the plunge and buy the camera while we could receive $300 off. With a new house, a wedding that lately seems it might be pushed up a year, and plans for trips and vacations, we knew that pulling 5-600 out to buy a new camera would be a farfetched reality. Plus, we just bought the small point and shoot camera for our underwater adventures that will be convenient to take on our smaller, less significant, adventures. There’s no need to have two of them.

Anyway, Bryan and I, along with Alicia who has had a similar camera for a few years now, ventured to Best Buy yesterday after work and we picked up our very own Nikon D40. I’m very excited and can’t wait to learn how to use all of its features!

<strike>9. Fix and learn how to use my grandfathers’ camera(*or get a SLR digital camera – whichever is first*)</strike>

Our little Marsha had her first birthday on the 4th of May. Being the wonderful puppy-parents we are, we wanted to do something to make her know that it was a special day. So, I went online and found a recipe for Peanut Butter Pupcakes! I made little cupcakes adorned with little dog bones. We gave them to her as daily treats as well, and even sent some home with other doggy friends, but for her birthday we put a candle in one of the cupcakes that were specifically made for big dogs. Sadly, I do not currently have pictures.

While trying to take the lens cap off of my camera, it fell out of my hands and broke. It would no longer turn on and the screen was cracked. We took pictures, but it was with Bryans moms’ camera… and of course we didn’t get the pictures before she left. I feel I had a pretty good run with the camera (3 years – going on 4), so we just sighed and decided that Bryan would go and look at cameras on his day off. We are regular Best Buy shoppers, but we’ve never bought one of their protection plans… or so we thought. While Bryan, Alicia, and Mom were looking at cameras, Bryan decided to check if we had purchased one, “just in case”, and much to our surprise, we did! So, of course we were ecstatic that we wouldn’t have to put the money out to buy a new camera until we learned that it would take 10 business days for us to have a camera again.

That was unacceptable. We knew that Alicia was to get induced in two days, and my friend Alicia, whom I used to work with, was getting married on Saturday. We could not miss taking pictures at two big events! Being the awesome boyfriend he is, and knowing that I was getting upset at the thought of not being able to capture the moments, Bryan very cleverly suggested that we get a waterproof digital camera. If you’ve been reading my journal long enough, you’d know that we bought snorkel gear for our cruise last November/December, and I had wished that we had thought to try and purchase a waterproof digital camera before departure. I’m so excited and can’t wait to use it this summer!!!

Of course, how things must happen, we got a call from Best Buy a few hours before the wedding and were able to pick out a comparable camera in perfect timing. Still, I’m glad we didn’t miss the arrival of Uncle Bryans first pride and joy… and a new toy is always fun!

63. Go a whole month w/o soda

So we decided that today will be the start of our “month without soda” from our 101 list (available on my profile). I think we both underestimated how hard it is going to be. For example: I had to buy lunch today because we didn’t have much to pack. Usually on Fridays, I will buy one of the delicious sandwiches from work that come with potato chips and a fountain soda. I LOVE fountain sodas… so, it inevitably causes a dilemma for me. Either I can’t get the sandwich, or I’ll have to stare delicious cherry coke straight in the eye and have the strength to pass.

Not only are we trying NOT to drink sodas, but we’re trying to replace it with water. My intentions are that this may hopefully continue well past the 30 day mark and help us to be healthier. I always hear of people saying they lost weight by cutting out soda. I really hope this to be the case with us, but I’m not getting my hopes up. We rarely actually have soda in the house, and I don’t feel like we go out to eat enough where it would make a difference. I guess we’ll see in a month. I hope we can stay strong!!!

PS. Many more blogs to come when I get use of the home computer and upload some pictures!

There have been so many changes since we moved into our first house nearly a month ago. One of my favorite changes concerns our little girl, Marsha Mellow.

At the apartment, Marshas cage was always located near the sliding glass doors. It was placed there when we first got her, and was never moved due to the convenience of being able to take her outside so easily. I'm not even sure why this happened, but in the new house, we put her cage in our room. Besides the constant whining if shes in the cage while we're in the room, its proven to be a great decision. To our dismay, Marsha has always spent all night in her cage. We tried time and time again to let her sleep with us, but she would usually get bored of sitting quietly after a short time or would "accidentally" pee the bed, and would be ushered off to be put back into her cage. The whole point of this being that since we've been in the new house, she's been sleeping with us all night everynight with no problem.

I've even started to wheen her out of her cage when we leave. I've trusted her to roam the room a few times when I left, and came home to find her peacefully eating on of her bones on the bed. I was even brave enough to let her roam the whole front end of the house once and came home with only on minor tragedy - she mutilated someones water bottle. Not only do I love waking up to see her floppy ears and smiling face, but her good behavior tells us that all of our training is FINALLY starting to pay off.

Plus... the sooner we can break all of her bad habits, the sooner we can look at getting her a brother or sister(dog, that is) ;)

You know why I haven’t written in a while? We don’t have internet hooked up at our house. You would think that living with a “communications technician”, as he calls himself, that wouldn’t be a problem. HA! I now feel Alicia’s pain when Ryan is working on other peoples problems and she mentions, “You know, our bathroom needs drywall”. They’re always so quick to help other people, aren’t they Alicia?

We moved in to the house last Tuesday the 31st and thanks to friends and family members, it’s a million times better than it was when we first moved in. I have before pictures posted on Facebook and once I can find the charger for my camera battery I will take some after pictures as well. I will try to keep up with the progress.

So far we’ve:

Painted the living room and hung blinds

Cleaned the carpets

Replaced the appliances

Cleaned EVERYWHERE

Tore out the master bathroom and tiled the floor

Scraped most of the sparkles off of the main bathroom

Got the lights/receptacles working

Cut the grass

Weeded the flower bed

Unpacked the kitchen… but that’s about all we’ve unpacked

Replaced the outside lights and knobs/deadbolts

I suppose that’s the most of it, but boy what a difference it has made! We’re hoping within the next week or so to get the fence started for Marsha, paint anything we can, get rid of the appliance graveyard our porch has turned out to be, and get more work done on the bathrooms. Ah, the gratification!

In the most exciting news:

THERE ARE ONLY 13 MORE DAYS UNTIL WE CLOSE ON OUR HOUSE!!!

Last night, after our dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings, we packed up the kitchen. All of the dishes except whats in the dishwasher and the sink at this very moment have been wrapped lovingly in newspaper and placed in their boxes. I now know how Old Mother Hubbard felt. We're both full of excitement, anticipation, and nervousness. One moment I think about how much I can't wait for closing day to get here and the next, I'm shocked by how fast approaching it is. All in all, it's a big step and an awesome achievement.

On a different note, Fig and I both have birthdays coming up. 25th for him and 29th for me. With the whole big whirlwind of buying a house, we had completely disregarded how fast they were approaching as well. Knowing that the last week before we move will probably be hectic and focused solely on the house, we decided last Friday that we would have our own small celebration. We went out to dinner at Border Cafe(one of my favorites) and gave ourselves a modest budget to spend on eachother at the mall. It seems like it's been a long time since we've been able to spend money on things like clothes, movies, and video games, so it was a complete blast. I was able to preview the spring lines in some of my favorite stores, and I'm ecstatic for Spring to come so I can wear my new clothes along with all of my old favorites! Fig, on the other hand, bought movies and will be buying video games in the next few months. His precious Playstation 3 video games are $60 a piece... which didn't really fit in the budget as he desperately wanted two games. We both decided he should wait until they got a little older and buy them used for half the price. I felt bad that he didn't have anything to take home, but he was so excited to buy me gifts that he barely even noticed.

With all of the wonderful events we've experienced and including those that are still to come, this is DEFINITELY turning out to be an important and memorable year in our lives!

Big progress to be announced on what I thought to be the last finished item. Fig and I have been looking at houses and found one that we liked. We put in an offer and heard yesterday that it was accepted!

So, unless something changes, come March 31st, we will be first time homebuyers!

I stole it off of Alicia's Myspace. This was when our baby girl was a baby and that is Ryan and Alicias dog Buddy that they adopted from Faithful Friends when we used to volunteer there. One of the cutest pictures ever. This one is going up on the wall fo' sho'!!

Having my brother and his family down for a week was a great way to end the holidays. The last time I had seen my niece, she was only a year and a half old, so seeing her now that she wasn't afraid of me because she doesn't see me regularly was definitely a refreshing change! We didn't make it to the Philly Museum of Art because of everyone coming down with a cold, but it was still a damn good time!

New Years eve was fun and relaxing, and we still made it to take Xzairre to Disney on Ice the next weekend! It was pretty cool and Xzairre was so excited. It was called "Worlds of Fantasy" and had four mini-shows of Cars, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and the new Tink movie that came out. So I guess that can count as "Take Xzairre somewhere he's never been", although I would really like to take him somewhere a lot cooler!

Besides that, I started training for my new position in B of A last Monday. Training is boring and I'm excited/anxious to start actually decisioning small business credit applications. Besides that, I've started a new exercise routine with my new schedule(I got 8 to 5 back, no more 8 to 7) and I've been helping to plan Fig's sisters baby shower... but I've kind of stopped trying to help so much because his mother is driving me nuts. I was looking at my 101 list yesterday and I realize how many little things I've been able to accomplish already and it mad me excited about the things that we still have left to do. I can't wait for our next adventure.

Thought I was kidding?

So today I went to the mall to buy some new bras and Fig met me for some lunch. On our way to the exit, he decided to look at some engagement rings. Needless to say, I found the style ring that I think I want. Here she is. If we get it from Kay's, he's going to wait for a sale... lol.

Anyway... I know the proposal won't be for a while (Should I know this much about my engagement?), but it's fun to look!

Am I completely lame?

So, this April 5th will be the 5 year anniversary of when Fig and I began dating. Seeing as it is a milestone and we've never really gone all out for an anniversary, we decided to try and make this year extra special. While searching around on the internet for things to do... I happened to stumble upon a location for another upcoming event (hopefully). Whenever we (Fig and I) would talk about marriage we would comment on how 2009 would be a perfect year. 5 years together. Two years on our own. Etc. So I assume that the engagement will probably begin sometime this year.

As a girl I've never "dreamed about my wedding", but I do now. I've decided that if possible, I want to have an autumn wedding here at Milburn Orchards. Not only would it be beautiful with the leaves changing colors and, depending on where it would be located, blossomed fruit, but they also offer some ever-so-amazing benefits. Thinking more and more about it is SO exciting, but also scary because Katy = not so good at planning. Hopefully I'll be able to recruit Alicia because it seems like she was able to make sure her wedding went off without a hitch.

2009 has the potential to be an amazingly unforgettable and HUGE year for us. Hooray and Happy New Year!!!
